Obituary for William Britton Smith

William Britton Smith, 97, a resident of the Orrstown Personal Care Home, departed this life on the evening of Thursday, May 27, 2021.

He was born on March 19, 1924, in Maple Grove, PA, a son of the late James and Bertha (Jones) Smith. William was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II, enlisting on June 5, 1943, and honorably discharged on October 5, 1945. He married Ida M. Keefer on March 26, 1949, in Winchester, VA. She preceded him in death on February 10, 2009.

William worked as a welder at the Letterkenny Army Depot for forty-two years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post #1599, Chambersburg; the Orrstown Lodge #262 F. & A.M.; and the former I.O.O.F. Lodge in Upper Strasburg. In his free time, William enjoyed being active and outdoors. He enjoyed farming, gardening, hiking, and going swimming at Fuller Lake. William was also very devout in his Christian faith.

He is survived by his daughter, Katherine K. Pearce of Camp Hill; two grandchildren, Amanda C. Pearce of Camp Hill and Alex M. Pearce and wife Shelby Hock of Gardners; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, William was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.

His graveside funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg. Chaplain Ed Rabenstein will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, Shippensburg.
