Obituary for David C. Shauf Sr.
David C. Shauf, 77, of Shippensburg, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at his home.
He was born on March 19, 1945 in Everett, PA, a son of the late Ruth Shauf and Clay Hammer.
David loved sports, especially baseball where he excelled as a young man being drafted to play minor league ball by the Houston Astros. Although he loved baseball, he missed his home and decided to leave the sport (something he wishes he would have never done). David was then drafted into the United States Army to fight in the Vietnam War. After returning home, he worked mainly as a warehouse forklift operator for Letterkenny Army Depot, where he retired. David continued to play baseball in the local leagues.
“As a family, we were blessed to have the years we did with him. No matter how long you have, you always wish you would have called more, laughed more, and loved more. Dad made sure he did that every single day by leaving voicemails, knowing we were at work and couldn’t answer. He loved the reactions when we finally listened to them.
We would watch him constantly call Mom, brothers, and sisters just to make fun of the way we said our names in our voicemails or tell us ‘I know who I called, now pick up the phone.’ He also made sure to sing ‘Happy Birthday to me’ every year if you didn’t call right away to tell him Happy Birthday.”
David or “Dad” was a great father to his seven kids (five by blood and two by love), his 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Our only regret is that he couldn’t stay on Earth with us forever. Dad believed in Jesus and knew where he was going when he left here. One day we will meet again. We all love you Dad. See ya later.
He is survived by his companion of 32 years, Kathy (Finkenbinder) Burkett; five children, Regina (Mike) Keefer, David (Alison Wentz) Shauf, Jr., Wes (Rena Shore) Shauf, Trevor (Ashley Myers) Shauf, and Ashley Shauf Caldwell; two stepsons, Mike (Kelly Denison) Burkett and Ryan (Tess Hill) Burkett; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two siblings, Charles Shauf of Greencastle and Ruth Shauf of Chambersburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donnie Shauf and Walter “Rick” Shauf.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. Pastor Bruce Levy will officiate. Military honors conducted by the Minutemen of the American Legion Post #223 will immediately follow the service at the funeral home. A time of visitation with the family will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
