Obituary for Bobby G. "Bob" McManus

Bobby G. “Bob” McManus, 87, of Shippensburg, passed away at the Hershey Medical Center on Monday, March 14, 2022.

Bobby was born on May 8, 1934, in Taylorville, Illinois, to Ernest Ray and Corrine (Carlisle) McManus. He grew up in Flora and Fairfield where he delivered papers, shined shoes, and setup pins at a bowling alley. After graduating from Fairfield High School in 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Following his service, Bobby attended Eastern Illinois University. In September of 1957, he transferred to Northern Illinois University where he met his future wife Annette Marie Kuhlemeier. After graduating from college, Bobby and Annette married on August 16, 1959.

Bob taught high school economics, government, history, and drivers training for 39 years. He first taught at East Aurora High School in Illinois. After moving to Southern California, Bobby taught at Rollings Hills/Palos Verdes Peninsula High School from 1965 until 1998. Bob earned a Master’s degree in 1966.

Bobby worked hard at whatever he did, never wanting to quit until a job was finished. During college he worked for the post office, often having to work late at night or early in the morning. He was very handy and was always helping out neighbors, working on his own house, or painting for extra income.

Bobby and Annette lived in Rancho Palos Verdes for over 33 years. He was a wonderful father to his three daughters. He loved playing games, flying kites, and taking them to the library. Bob coached girls softball and often assisted his wife on Girl Scout outings.

Bob enjoyed carpentry, genealogy, reading, and American history. He was an excellent storyteller and loved to share stories about his childhood and time in the service.

Bobby is survived by his daughters, Alesia (husband David Forsyth), Barbie, and Caryn. He is also survived by loving nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Annette, and brothers Ernie Ray and Johnny.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in the Spring Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Edward H. Blank officiating. A viewing will be held in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium on Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
