Obituary for Beth S. Herb

Beth S. Herb, 66, of Shippensburg, passed away the afternoon of Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at the Chambersburg Hospital.

She was born on October 28, 1955 in York, the eldest of two daughters of the late Rev. William A. and Patricia (Jury) Speers.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, John A. Herb; sons Gregory Herb (Brownwyn) of Shippensburg and Nathan Herb (Amanda) of Eagleville, PA, her sister Valerie Speers Miller (Jeffery Miller) Conway, SC, nieces Meghan Nash (Chris) their daughter Natalie, and niece Jenna Miller. She is also survived by her Grandchildren Rowen, Maeve, Nora, William, and Lucas. She was a cherished spouse, mother, and grandmother of three young women and two young men.

Beth was a beloved and respected kindergarten/1st grade teacher for Big Spring School District. During the second half of her career she became the first National Board Certified Teacher in her district, which is a distinction that only 3% of all teachers in the nation achieve.

Once retired, needlework (and especially quilting) became her second highest priority next to doting on, teaching, encouraging, and loving her five Grandchildren. She often joked that as a junior high home economics student she struggled to sew a zipper into a skirt. As an adult, she became a master quilter, who taught many classes for ShippenStitch in Shippensburg. She was regarded as a caring, patient and skilled teacher by her adult students, just like her kindergarteners…no surprise.

Beth’s wishes were that there will be no public viewing, visitation, or service at this time.

In lieu of flowers she encourages her quilter friends to donate a suitable sized quilt to the NICU at the Harrisburg Hospital to support families or to make a monetary donation to Quilts for Kids at http://www.quiltsforkids.org/
